Yesterday when the kids were with their dad, I figured I'd take care of things they don't like to do, like grocery shopping. When I turned the key in the ignition, the engine turned but didn't catch. I called roadside assistance, and they said the only things they could do were give the battery a jump or tow the car to the dealership. I didn't think the battery was dead, but that seemed like a good first plan of action. After the initial snafu, where a service from Vinton, near El Paso (about 600 miles away) called because they couldn't find my address, a local guy called and told me he'd be here as soon as the Cowboy game was over. I'd already given up on leaving the house, so that was fine. When he showed up with two of his buddies, they were all visibly drunk. No matter, they still managed to try to jump the car without lighting anyone on fire and even pushed it out to the curb.
Today I had it towed to the VW dealership. When the service rep called, he asked if I lived in the woods. Then he told me some kind of small rodents had chewed through a lot of wires and a couple of parts, none of the names of which I remember. Naturally, rodent chewing is not covered by warranty.
After talking to Jay and figuring out there aren't any rats or mice in the area, we came to the conclusion that one or more of the many cute little squirrels in the area did the damage.
At least I'm not alone. http://squirrelsatemywiring.com/
