Soul Food

There's not a lot of natural beauty here in North Texas. The trade-off for living here is that we have access to world-class museums and orchestras. Some day I'd love to live in a place that has both. Fortunately for me, Ryan and Mira really enjoy art and music. For outdoor fun, we have to content ourselves with local parks and bike trails.

Last week we finally made it to the DMA for the Ashes of Vesuvius Exhibit and to the Nasher. We took Mira's friend Anabelle with us.

For his birthday Wednesday Ryan wanted to go to the Spiral Diner in Ft. Worth then to the Ron Mueck exhibit at The Modern. Nichole and Margaux went with us. If you're going to have another kid with you at a museum, it's definitely best to have their parent along. At one point Nichole said to Margaux "I think you should step back from that sculpture before Ryan has a heart attack." Ryan was really stressed out, because Margaux was really close to the sculpture and kept pointing to it with a piece of paper. The rest of the day was great though. Ryan was really excited about his birthday (and his gifts!).

Thursday we went to hear the Organ Odyssey at the Myerson. We try to go to all of the performances in this children's series. Sometimes they're really good, and sometimes there's too much talk and not enough music. This one was exceptionally good. The kids always complain that they are distracted by the movement and noise of all the other children, though. I told them I'll take them to a performance that isn't geared for kids so they can really enjoy the music without the annoyance of the person next to them bouncing in her seat or talking to his mom. The Myerson is a phenomenal symphony hall, and the DSO is really good. When I'm in just the right seat there I feel like all of life's answers are right at my fingertips.

What an awesome week! I'm glad Ryan had such a great birthday - it sounds terrific. And how awesome that they behave so well that you can take them anywhere. My 9yo and 6yo are like that - but I'd rather saw my own hand off than take my 4yo or 2yo to any place where things could be harmed! LOL!
