We had our first "official" meeting for our community garden group today, and we built 6 boxes for square foot gardening. We have an ambitious, long-term plan in place, but the thing we're doing most immediately is planting things in the six boxes, which are 4' x 2'. The kids all pitched in with drilling and painting, and the moms did the sawing and assembling. There are six families participating now, with the possibility of adding more next spring or summer. I'm very, very excited about it. For about six weeks, every time I've talked to more than one person I've said "hey, wouldn't it be great if we could have a community garden," and now we're making it happen. The long term plan includes learning how to can and freeze so all of our vegetable needs can be met by the garden.
First came the planning:

...some drilling...

...and painting...

...there was a lot of painting.

and Friday we'll fill them with dirt/compost and get them ready for planting.
